The Distinguished Works of the Preeminent Black Author, Ralph Ellison Ralph Ellison is one of the most lauded yet misunderstood writers of the twentieth century. Ellison is considered a short-story writer and an essayist at heart, but his most distinguished work is the novel, Invisible Man. Ellison has been called everything from "the greatest black American author" (Brennan) to unnecessarily "excessive" in his writing style ("Ralph Ellison: 1914-1994"). For the most part, Ellison is held in high regard in the literary community. The critical consensus on Ralph Ellison is that he is one of the most influential and passionate authors of his generation. Ralph Waldo Ellison was born on March 1, 1914 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Lewis Alfred Ellison and Ida Ellison (Kennedy and Gioia). From his birth, it seems Ellison was destined to become a writer; his father named him after the poet Ralph Waldo Emerson. Early in life, Ellison was influenced by his mother who was an ardent social activist (Kennedy and Gioia). Ellison was raised in a middle-class white neighborhood. After graduating from high school in Oklahoma, Ellison was awarded a scholarship to the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. Ellison left school early and moved to Harlem ("Ralph Ellison: 1914-1994"). It was here that he met two of his greatest early influences: the poet Langston Hughes and the novelist Richard Wright (Kennedy and Gioia). In the late 1930s and early 1940s, Ellison was primarily an essayist who was published in several American periodicals. It was in these early years that he wrote "King of the Bingo Game" and the Buster and Riley trilogy. In 1952, Ellison's In visible Man was published in what became his most notable work. Total Quality Management (TQM) is a comprehensive and structured approach to organizational management that seeks to improve the quality of products and services through ongoing refinements in response to continuous feedback. TQM requirements may be defined separately for a particular organization or may be in adherence to established standards, such as the International Organization for Standardization's ISO 9000 series.TQM can be applied to any type of organization; it originated in the manufacturing sector and has since been adapted for use in almost every type of organization imaginable, including schools, highway maintenance, hotel management, and churches TQM processes are divided into four sequential categories: plan, do, check, and act (the PDCA cycle).In the planning phase, people define the problem to be addressed, collect relevant data, and ascertain the problem's root cause; in the doing phase, people develop and implement a solution, and decide upon a measurement to gaug e its effectiveness; in the checking phase, people confirm the results through before-and-after data comparison; in the acting phase, people document their results, inform others about process changes, and make recommendations for the problem to be addressed in the next PDCA cycle. IntroTotal quality management (TQM) consists of organization-wide efforts to install and make permanent a climate in which an organization continuously improves its ability to deliver high-quality products and services to customers. Total Quality Management (TQM) is a participative, systematic approach to planning and implementing a constant organizational improvement process. Its approach is focused on exceeding customers’ expectations, identifying problems, building commitment, and promoting open decision-making among workers.The Road to TQM (Growth) Until around 1950, Japanese products were perceived in markets all over the world as being very inexpensive, but with poor quality. By the 1980s, th e same markets were recognizing MADE IN JAPAN as a sign of high quality and reliability. What happened during those three decades? Mass production systems were developed mainly by U. S. industries in the early 20th century. Other countries that were then emerging as new powers adopted variations of this scientific management of companies according to their individual contexts.After the World war, the devastated Japanese economy moved vigorously to restore its previous production level through full-on importation of technologies and ideas from the U. S. and Europe. In the postwar period, Japanese industries absorbed many modern concepts. The quality management systems were typical examples. However, Japanese-made still had a connotation of being inexpensive but with poor quality until the early 1950s. A number of factors contributed to reversing the notorious reputation of Japanese products in the subsequent two decadesTOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT ADAPTION:Japan introduced development of applied technologies, creative reception of imported systems, successful introduction of industrial policies in harmonization with the private sector, expansion of world trade, gradual liberalization of domestic markets for foreign capital, and so on. Among them, what calls our particular attention in relation to management systems is Japan’s 1950s and early 1960s adaptation of Total Quality management. The Japanese management philosophy, system and practices, all focusing mainly on people and work is also termed as â€Å"Total Quality Management†.The common goal of TQM is to produce and serve the quality the customers need in a most economic manner. The card that they wave is then registered from which the money gets automatically deducted after they have finished their shopping. The company has also installed the RIFD or Radio Frequency Identification which is basically chipped into every single trolley. All the products have bar codes with them and when a product is picked and put into the trolley, due to the barcode present on the side of the product, the RIFD feature recognizes this bar code and generates the amount for that particular product which gets queued up in the counter alongside the users name (Fan et al., 2014). When the item is removed from the trolley, the amount that has been queued will be automatically deducted from the total. The main advantage of using this feature is to reduce the time that is taken while making the total for each customer by going through each and every product. By this there is no queue in front of the counter as the total sum that is generated is then deducted from the card that they used to gain their entry into the store. By this the customers need not to wait in front of the counter to pay for their products. To counterpart the problems with the PayWaveTechnology that is the users who do not have cards, the company issues them a temporary card with some minimum balance in it. For users to avail this facility, they need to deposit some cash which will be credited directly into their card. By this way, PayWave card can be used by them to shop in the supermarket. After they have finished their shopping, they can exit from the store just like other customers. The Ballad of Love and Hate The Ballad of Love and Hate was written by the Avett Brothers in 2007. The lyrics are simple and the genre of music is a mix of blues, rock, bluegrass and folk. Many of the songs that the Avett Brothers write and sing have complex meanings, and are beautifully written. These young men are self-proclaimed modern day poets. I chose this song because of the complexity, and although I’ll try to analyze it, I understand that no one truly know the meaning of the song except the one who penned it. There are several different interpretations of the meaning of this song; the two below are ones that I find most interesting. The Ballad of Love and Hate begins with â€Å"Love† being gone, on vacation as it were. When she decides to return, â€Å"Hate† is hurt, apathetic and behaves recklessly. After the first verse of the song â€Å"Love† is portrayed as never doing anything wrong, being patient and kind and providing hope, care and unconditional regard for â€Å"Hate. At first glance the song seems to be written about two people, their broken relationship, and eventual reconciliation. This may hold true with what the artist was trying to convey. The Avett Brothers write primarily about what they know, about relationships, and life experience. The personification of â€Å"Love† may be modeled after a woman, possibly one of these young men’s wives, who displayed unconditional love. The vacation in the first verse may refer to a time of separation, where â€Å"Hate† grew bitter, yet eventually realized his error, and was won over by the gentle ways of â€Å"Love. â€Å"Hate’s† unruly and reckless behavior may have been modeled after one of these young men’s actions. I find the verse about the cab driver very interesting. Do Seth and Scott Avett realize that their wives could possibly find other lovers, or maybe one of their wives actually did have an affair and this is an attempt to identify with how the oth er man may have felt? Maybe it is purely a hypothetical? Maybe these artists realize how truly blessed they are to have the women in their lives, and feel guilty about some of their actions. I find that this song may have been written as a personal apology. It almost has that feeling to it. Because of the vivid personification of both â€Å"Love† and â€Å"Hate,† it appears that this song is written about two people who fit their descriptions. The interpretation that I tend to hold to is that this song is written about one person. Inside all of us is the ability to act more like â€Å"Love† or more like â€Å"Hate. † I look back on my life and see that sometimes â€Å"Love† has been on vacation, and â€Å"Hate,† with his disorderly and uncontrolled behavior, is the only one home. Bitterness, unforgiveness, and selfish pride all lend itself to the person of â€Å"Hate† in this song. If we are honest, we can all identify with these emotions. Loving behavior sometimes takes a while to arrive. When those loving emotions do arrive, often we feel silly or ashamed for the disregard, or disrespect that we’ve shown others. â€Å"Love† brings hope and care and room for growth, as is true in life. And the Biblical reference to love being patient and kind, could not be more correct. Eventually â€Å"Love† gently shows â€Å"Hate† that there is a better way, and the two sides are reconciled. Undoubtedly, if we are talking about an internal conflict of human experience, the cycle will repeat itself. I don’t hold a degree in philosophy, but I find myself thinking quite deeply about this concept. Love and hate are two sides of the same coin, and one cannot exist without the other. One magnifies the other. Without hate, love would be rendered meaningless, and without love we would not understand hate. Light and darkness can illustrate this for us. If we only had light we would not need to define it, but light exists because it is different from darkness. Darkness and light define each other. So love defines hate. I don’t know if this is what the artists had in mind when writing this song, my interpretation is probably a little too deep, yet the concept is there whether Seth and Scott Avett meant it to be there or not.
